Dear Members

The first month of 2006 proved to be quite an extraordinary month not just for Denmark but also for Danes around the world. We have of course been very aware of all the attention towards Denmark, especially after being the centre of a demonstration two weeks ago. This is also the reason for the changes on our website. At the moment it is not possible to read about new members or finding pictures of anyone connected with our organisation without logging in. If you have forgotten your details please click on Forgot your username or password?, type your email address and the system will automatically resend you the information.

However, all the activities have not prevented the DUCC in the everyday work and we are very busy at the moment planning our big gala evening 30 March. Our next Red Letter will feature a presentation on all royal and celebrity participants and also a description of all of our auction and raffle prizes. Furthermore we will send out the invites to all of our members before the end of this week, so check your post as this is not an event you will want to miss.

Another big event this month will be the first regional event this year which will take place in Manchester were we meet up with the newly started Anglo-Danish Trade link for a lunch at the Radisson in Manchester Airport. To join us please contact danishconsulate@aewarchitects.com. Also please go to page 6 to read more about Morten Gammelgaard who has taken over from Peter Mørk as the new Trade Commissioner in Manchester.

Please welcome to the Chamber this month new member Just-eat, a very successful Danish company who will be starting up in the UK in the near future.

Also please welcome our new intern Helene Pedersen. Helene took over from Peter Dalskov in the beginning of February and will stay with us until August, please see next page for more information on Helene.

Best regards,

Martin Mortensen

Executive Director

Just-eat

The hugely Danish web success is now starting up in the UK.

Just-Eat A/S has sold about half of its shares to Danes living abroad and is now ready to penetrate their concept to a number of countries with the UK as their headquarter.

The company has since its start in 2001 in Denmark increased their employees from 2 to 25 and are expecting to be ready with the website www.just-eat.co.uk 15 March 2006.

Just-eat.co.uk Ltd. will alongside Coca-Cola gather all fast food restaurations online with their patent pending GPRS technology in order for the UK consumers to order their food online and get a direct reply form the restaurant online.

In Denmark there are now 750 online restaurants available on Just-eat.dk which in January alone accepted 300.000 orders for meals though their website.

Th
e CEO and Founder Jesper Buch states "We have tested the UK market throughly and we have started to sell the concept with great success which means we will have achieved a portfolio for when we go online.” (15 March 2006).
Just-eat.dk were awarded with the E-commerce prize 2005 and this year the Director Jesper Buch was awarded “E of the Year”

 Five Minute Focus

Morten Gammelgaard - New Trade Commissioner in Manchester

RL: What is your academic and professional background?

I have a bachelor degree in international sales- and marketing.

From August 2005 through to when I started in this job, I ran my own Export consultancy business in Vejle.

August 2004 – August 2005 I headed the sales department in an advertising agency in Vejle.

August 2003 – August 2004 I worked as sales- and marketing director for Nordisk Tekstil A/S in Odense. My main focus was a total “turn around” and re-structuring of the international distribution channels in order to make the company survive. When I left Nordisk Tekstil, the sales dept. was restructured and growth was shoving in all markets.

May 1999 – August 2003 I held a position as Sales and Marketing Executive with Elka Rainwear A/S in Sunds by Herning. The company manufactures waterproof work wear for various industries. When I came to the company they had very little export sales, and when I left, the export amounted to over 40% of the total turnover, which had doubled in the period.

The above was achieved via systematically building up distribution from nothing to full market distribution in the UK, France, Holland, and the US. As a result Elkas product line for Industrial Fishing grew from non existence, to the second largest brand in Europe in 3 years.

Are there any fields that you specifically operate within and how do you feel this will contribute to the Trade Commission in Manchester?

I specialise in the following sectors: Fishing and aquaculture, Food, Industry and machines.

Due to my background I have a strong network within the sectors above, which the Trade Commission and the Danish business community as a whole will be able to benefit from.

What will your relation with the Anglo-Danish Trade link in Manchester be and how do you see the continued cooperation between the Trade Commission and the DUCC?

I believe that I can assist in the network and contribute in building the relationship further between DK and the UK. Furthermore I believe that we can mutually gain a great deal from co-operating, sharing knowledge and experience.

Which industries do you see as having the strongest potential in the North and which areas do you mainly focus on through your work?

We see a large potential within the construction sector. This sector is mainly handled by our colleagues in London and therefore we will not be focusing on this sector directly. However we will focus on machinery for the construction industry.

How do you view the business climate in the Manchester area in terms of establishing subsidiaries?

80% of the UK citizens are with 2 hours drive from Manchester, the area has a relatively low salary level and Manchester historically has always been a leading driving force in terms of industrial advances. Ideally located in the middle of the country, not only have some of the worlds largest companies set up home here, but the massive redevelopment of Manchester as a whole, creates a wealth of opportunities for Danish Companies.
