Men Suffer From Gynaecological Cancer Too
What is your invovlement with the Eve Appeal?
Until Lone (Peter wife, RL) became too ill, I was the Acting Chairman of the Eve Appeal. My dear friend, Angus MacLennan, took over and ran the charity in the most brilliant way, until we could find our dream chairman. Last year we finally found him: Under the Chairmanship of Lord Sharmann, my fellow trustees and I now have overall responsibility for the charity. This particularly involves setting the strategy as well as identifying and meeting with potential major donor in order to raise funds for the world-class researchers, Professor Jacobs and his team. Today I know that the research we support will save hundred thousands of lives every year in the future.
What do the Eve Appeal and the associated Danish Mermaid Project primarily do and who is involved with the work?
The Eve Appeal raises funds for research at the Gynaecological Cancer Research Unit at University College London - £4 million is urgently required. The Mermaid Project raises funds, mainly in Denmark, for one project at a time, in units of approx dkr 25mio. The projects must be groundbreaking gynaecological cancer research, with a strong Danish involvement, and an international cooperation. We try to keep our fundraising costs at a minimum so that as much of the income as possible goes to the research, where it belongs. Our research is all groundbreaking and our researchers are among the best in the world. We have robust and independent medical and financial audit systems, to ensure the research is carried out in an optimal way, and the funds are managed effectively and securely.
Why did you see a need for these organisations?
Lone and I discovered these facts about gynaecological cancers: They make up 10% of all cancers in the world, with 1 million new cases each year Mortality rates are high, at 50% They have the worst improvement in survival rates of any cancers over the last 30 years The UK and Denmark are the worst hit countries in the world The best gynaecological research team in the world was here in UK, and had too little funding If funding was provided for a 10 year research programme, mortality rates could be reduced by 50%

What results have you accomplished over the years?
Firstly, human lives have been saved, due to major research-results. We are winning! The Mermaid Project is now raising funds for its 2nd project of dkr. 25mio, and the future is looking good. The Eve Appeal has now risen over £34 mio., to a large extend from statutory funding due to the fantastic quality and ambitions of our research team. Even the Americans are supporting us. We have also been very fortunate to obtain support from some major trusts and foundations and wonderful private persons.
Why do you think you have been so successful in encouraging royalty and celebrities to be involved with the organisations? How could members of the DUCC get involved with the Eve Appeal?
I Would like to add ‘captains of industry’, and I think the answer is firstly because these fantastic people really wish to use the privileged position they are in to do something good, this includes your own Chairman. This fits perfectly with us being one of the leading women’s cancer charities, supporting an extremely vital cause, with a professional team, doing it for the right reasons.
Our supporters are all very busy and there is a big demand for their valuable time, so we are very proud that they have chosen to be involved with us. They are doing it without personal gain or recognition, purely because they believe in our work and our team, and they know that together we can make a difference. It has been reassuring to discover, that there are so many people like that in the world.
There are a number of excellent charities in both the UK and Denmark, but for those of the DUCC members who feel strongly about women’s reproductive cancers, then we are the one to support………
What is your hope for the future of the Eve Appeal?
We are in a position to make a major contribution to raising the funds required, and make it a substantial better world for women of this world and their families.

This year our Annual DUCC Gala Evening is in support of the Eve Appeal, which funds pioneering research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer. Within ten years, Professor and Director of Research Ian Jacobs’ team aims to develop techniques capable of saving 50% of women who now fall victim to this silent killer.
So far, money has been raised with the help of The Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the NHS and other benefactors - but the Eve Appeal still need to raise a further £6 million for the research to continue. The Gala Evening will be a major fund raising event and though this evening the DUCC attempt to raise £10.000 for The Eve Appeal Gynecology Cancer Research Fund. |

The
Gala Evening will take place at the beautiful and very exclusive Drapers' Hall, which is not normally accessible to the public. Draper’s Hall is originally a Livery Company for manufactures, established in 1361 and placed in the City of London. Dress Code, Black Tie www.thedrapers.co.uk

Throughout the Gala Evening there will be great entertainment delivered by famous magician Chris Dugdale and eminent musician Lone Widahl Madsen.

Chris Dugdale is a famous magician with speciality in Close-up magic, which is the most interactive form of entertainment available. At the Gala Evening he will show us his own invented material, which is proving a big sell out. Chris Dugdale really has something unique to offer and he has performed for major celebrities, Heads of State and members of The Royal Family. DUCC is convinced that Chris Dugdale is going to be a memorable experience and is looking very much forward to see him perform at the evening.
Lone Widahl Madsen has earned herself a considerable reputation as a versatile performing artist working extensively around the world as both as a classical musician and actress. Her musical career has led to engagements at venues throughout Europe and the US and is much in demand both as a soloist and chamber musician. Lone has performed with well-known ensembles and had the honour of being the only musician invited to perform when His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince of Denmark visited New York in 2003. Lone Widahl Madsen also performed at our Gala Evening Dinner last year and DUCC is looking very forward to enjoy her music again at this year's event.
The Gala Evening will be a major fund raising event to support the Eve Appeal and during the evening there will be a charity auction to raise money for the fond. DUCC is very pleased to present all the below listed some of the prizes that can be bid for at the auction. Besides the charity auction a raffle will also take place with many exiting prizes. It will be possible to buy raffle tickets at the price of £10 for one ticket and £20 for three, so please make sure to bring some cash with you.
