 News from the Director

Dear Members,

Welcome to the summer issue of the DUCC Red Letter.

First, I would like to thank all of you who attended the DUCC Summer Cocktail Party for your excellent company on the 10th of July 2008. Despite the inclement weather throughout the last month, the sun at least shone throughout this enjoyable evening on Denmark, or at least on the Ambassador of Denmark’s roof terrace, which proves that sometimes you can be lucky with the weather in London.

Once again, we are delighted with the success of the three traditional annual events and it is extremely pleasing to see how they continue to blossom. The two annual events of the year to date have both been resounding successes, the Annual Dinner at the Merchants Taylors Hall with after-dinner speaker Mr Peter Schmeichel and on this very evening, our Summer Cocktail Party which 99 members and their guests attended.

The last annual event of 2008 is the DUCC Christmas Lunch, which will take place on the 12th of December 2008. It will provide a great opportunity for our members to use this occasion as their internal staff Christmas ‘do’. We expect it to be extremely popular so please ensure you book your places ASAP.

Until then we have a very busy autumn programme. Most recently confirmed is our fashion evening on the 24th of September in the newly refurbished surroundings here at the Royal Danish Embassy. We are expecting an audience of young Danish designers, fashion houses with potential interest in UK expansion, Danish brands already established in the UK, Danish employees of London department stores and most importantly members of the Danish –UK Chamber of Commerce. It will be a very interesting mix, a great platform to exchange views, ideas and experiences and ultimately business. Please see page 16 for the rest of this autumn’s compelling programme.

Please welcome to the Chamber this month our newest members: Stephen Morris Shipping, FOSS and MEWS42. Mr Stephen Morris founded his eponymous shipping company in 1969 and the company handles antique exports throughout the UK as well as shipping to several European countries. Please see page 13 for details. We also have the pleasure of welcoming FOSS; FOSS provides analytical instruments for the food, agriculture, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Please see page 14 for details. Furthermore we would like to welcome MEWS42, which is a versatile project space suitable for art exhibitions, product launches, gourmet dinners and private events, etc. Please see page 15 for further details.

Also please welcome our new intern Trine Storm. Trine is taking over from Annette early August and will stay with us until the end of January 2009. Please see below for more information on Trine.

Best regards,

Martin Mortensen
Executive Director
Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce

Arla Foods honoured by HRH Prince Henrik of Denmark

Arla Foods UK has been presented with Denmark’s prestigious national award, The Diploma of the Danish Export Association and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour for delivering excellent growth within the Arla Foods amba group.

The honour, which is awarded annually, is presented to Danish companies, located outside Denmark, in recognition of outstanding efforts in promoting and marketing Danish products and services abroad.

Arla Foods UK has been bestowed the honour for delivering a substantial increase in its earnings and significantly growing sales of exported products, particularly those within the Lurpak and Anchor portfolios. In January 2007, Lurpak became the UK’s number one selling butter and spreads brand and has since increased its lead over its nearest competition by £30 million.

In addition to growing sales of exported products in the UK, the judging panel chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Henrik, the executive committee of the Danish export association, and a representative of Denmark’s ministry of foreign affairs, recognised Arla Foods UK’s commitment to lessening its impact on the environment. During 2007 energy consumption was reduced by 16 per cent, water by 21.6 per cent and carbon dioxide by 16.4 per cent. This is in addition to over 791 tonnes of packaging being recycled. The accumulation of these efforts saw Arla Foods UK awarded energy efficiency accreditation from The Carbon Trust – a first for a dairy company in the UK.

Peter Lauritzen - Arla Foods UK
Birger Riis-Jørgensen
Anbassador of Denmark
Danish Ambassador Birger Riis-Jorgensen presented The Diploma of the Danish Export Association and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour to Peter Lauritzen, CEO of Arla Foods UK, at a ceremony at the Danish Embassy in London on 15 July.

“I am delighted to present this award to Peter and his team for delivering outstanding business performance, not only in terms of the growth they have achieved for exported products, but for their dedication to the increasingly important environmental agenda,“ said Birger Riis-Jorgensen.

“I wish Peter, his team and Arla Foods the very best,” he added.

Accepting the award, Peter Lauritzen said: “We are delighted to receive The Diploma of the Danish Export Association and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour.

“This is a significant achievement and a reflection of our commitment to delivering the highest standards at every stage of our operations. Our success is thanks to the hard work and commitment of everyone in the company who, like myself, will take much pride in this honour.”

The Diploma of the Danish Export Association and His Royal Highness Prince Henrik’s Medal of Honour is Denmark’s most prestigious recognition for extraordinary achievement in promoting and marketing Danish products and services abroad. Since it was founded in 1965, the Association has provided an unrivalled platform for quality-conscious Danish manufacturers and service providers to interface with their foreign customers and partners. The Danish Export Association is a private, non-profit organisation whose purpose is to encourage trade between Danish and foreign companies.

Scandinavian Kitchen's 1st birthday

On 10 July 2008, member of The Danish UK Chamber of Commerce Scandinavian Kitchen celebrated its 1st birthday. It has now been a year since Bronte Blomhøj and her husband Jonas Aurell started their café and shop and proved that ryebread is not only for Scandinavians. Bronte has very kindly given an interview to Red Letter.

Bronte explains that one of the ideas behind Scandinavian Kitchen was to create a place where it is possible to get Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish food all in one place. Bronte and Jonas saw a gap in the market and seized the opportunity to show the rich Scandinavian food culture to the British market. Furthermore Scandinavian Kitchen wanted to create a healthier choice from standard sandwiches and instead started to serve Danish open sandwiches on ryebread. And the British people love it. Bronte says that during the week the guests are 15% Scandinavian and 85% British which shows that the British people have taken the healthier choice in. During the weekend the numbers are opposite as the Scandinavian people come to buy those special supplies from the home countries impossible to live without in London.

The 1st birthday was celebrated in style. Scandinavian Kitchen provided herring and layer cake for all guests dropping by and in the evening approx. 150 especially invited guests celebrated with snaps served along with the Danish inspired canapés.

Since October 2007 Scandinavian Kitchen has been a member of The Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce as well as the other Nordic Chambers

“It provides us the possibility to network with other members and we reach members with a relation to Scandinavia which we would not have reached if we were not members” says Bronte.

Grundberg Mocatta Rakison LLP and Zhonglun W&D form significant cross-border association.

London cross-border solicitors Grundberg Mocatta Rakison LLP (“GMR”) and leading Chinese law firm Zhonglun W&D (“ZLWD”), headquartered in Beijing, are pleased to announce their association. This development provides ZLWD’s existing London operat ions with the support of GMR and additional capacity for their expanding European cross-border portfolio. ZLWD, a full service law firm with more than 300 lawyers, has offices not only in Beijing, but also the key Chinese industrial and financial cities of Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu and Shijiazhuang. GMR will also provide ZLWD with access to their extensive network of professional links.

Richard Beresford, partner at GMR who has been the driving force behind this association, says

“As a firm, our work is dominated by cross-border transactions and multi-jurisdictional issues. Given the already significant and growing importance of China in the world economy, we have seen the need for a tie-up of this nature for quite a while. This is a win-win for all concerned, not only the two firms, but also our clients across the globe.”

ZLWD’s London based partner Haibin Xue explains his firm’s European expansion strategy by stating

“As the only Chinese law firm expanding into the UK market, we are always keen to work closely with local firms with different specialties. This latest development provides each firm with additional capacity for its expanding portfolio of cross-border work in each other’s principal jurisdiction. Following our recent association with a French law firm, we see this as an important leap forward for our firm in its English and European development in working with local firms in a more structured manner”.

Haibin Xue becomes a consultant to GMR and correspondingly Richard Beresford becomes a consultant to ZLWD.

Tom Schroeder

Tom Schroder, Grundberg Mocatta Rakison’s Partner in charge of Anglo-Danish clients and matters, sees this recent move by his firm as an alliance of significant importance to those current and future clients who have their eyes on the booming Chinese market.

How to Hold on to National Identity Following Relocation

Fergus Rose
ACS International Schools

By Fergus Rose, Head of Marketing, ACS International Schools, England

Whilst the immediate priority for any family relocating abroad is that children become acclimatised to the new country and find their feet quickly, it is also important for children to maintain a sense of their national identity, particularly as many children will ultimately return to the country of their birth.

Relocating to a new country, whether on a permanent or temporary basis, is one of the biggest steps any family can take. Relocation offers excitement and adventure, but it can also throw up many issues and concerns, not just for the individual whose work assignment may have prompted the move, but also for his or her whole family. Even very young children can experience stress, `culture shock’ and emotional anxiety at leaving familiar surroundings, school, friends and wider family members.

Over fifty per cent of international assignees relocate with children, and maintaining contact with friends and family back home is one of the key ways to establish children’s sense of security and confidence after an overseas move.

Once in the UK, international schools in particular will be able to offer expert admissions and housing staff to help ease families through the ‘in-bound’ transition to their new home and their new environment. Many international schools have welcoming committees which provide friendly help and advice to new families including coffee mornings for parents, holiday activities for all the family, as well as weekend clubs and activities such as football and tennis. Some schools operate a `buddy’ scheme whereby each new child is paired with an existing student of similar age and nationality to help the youngster navigate his or her way through the first weeks at school and become familiar with the school routine, including playtime and lunchtime customs – all this helps children to thrive during the transition period to their new school and country or residence. International schools also allow children to celebrate diversity and experience a range of cultures.

Integration is important, but it is essential that relocating children are also given the opportunity, both at home and at school, to experience and feel proud of their own nationality.

Case Study

Camilla and her husband Mads relocated from Copenhagen to London nine years ago when their son Andreas was four and daughter Laura just five months old. For the family, maintaining their Danish identity has naturally been a high priority and whilst the family speaks Danish at home and regularly spends holidays with family back in Denmark, Camilla and Mads have also wanted to make sure that their children retain a `sense of their Danish roots’ in everyday life. For this reason the family was very keen to find a school which would allow the children to maintain their national identity and cultural pride.

ACS Cobham International School was recommended to the family by friends whose children were happily settled in to the school and who felt that it successfully acknowledged and celebrated the international diversity of its students.

One of the elements the family has most valued is the Native Language Programme which the school has developed in cooperation with parents. For one lesson per week, the children receive native language tuition from a Danish teacher. The teaching is tailored to each child's individual needs, and because Andreas and Laura are fluent speakers of Danish but have fewer opportunities to read and write in their mother-tongue, the programme concentrates on those aspects. The NLP also gives Andreas and Laura the chance to mix with the other 45 or so Danish children at the school.

If they chose to, Andreas and Laura can go on to study the IB Diploma (the International Baccalaureate) - a globally recognised qualification which allows international students who may be moving between countries to progress smoothly from secondary to university level education.

As an active member of the Parent School Organisation (PSO), Camilla supports and helps coordinate the extra-curricular initiatives at the school which also promote a sense of national identity such as scheduled flag raising days for the more than 60 different nationalities on campus and International Days - where foods, national costumes, games and traditions are all shared and celebrated.

Having been a Danish Country Representative for several years (there are currently Country Reps for more than 40 different nationalities present on campus), Camilla and her family have formed friendships with many of the 22 Danish families presently enrolled at ACS Cobham International School.

Camilla and Mads are delighted that Andreas and Laura feel both `Danish and English' and see themselves as `children of the world'.

 Stephen Morris Shipping

Stephen Morris Shipping was founded in 1969 as part of a large antiques business run by Stephen Morris. The new trading entity was to handle the growing demand for transport of British antiques around the world and initially the business concentrated on moving British items from Norway back home. The company was incorporated in 1979 and became a ‘plc’ in 1997.

Roger Aiken
Joint Managing Director

Today, with a wealth of moving experience, the company now moves antiques, fine art, interior design and corporate and private relocation worldwide. Stephen Morris Shipping has a fleet of modern trucks from 3.5 tonne to 38 tonne and they cover the UK and most of Europe on a regular basis. Other shipments travel by air and by sea with appointed and trusted Agents handling overseas destination (or origin) services often under the scrutiny of SMS staff flown over from the UK.

In 2007, the company purchased another specialist moving company in Essex, Freestone Transport. That company had, for nearly 50 years, operated a regular twice-monthly service to and from Denmark and Sweden. Stephen Morris Shipping has now expanded that service and it has rapidly become the ‘favoured’ means of transportation for many companies and private individuals between Denmark and the UK, and even other parts of the world.

The company is based in Brent, near Wembley Stadium with a large containerised storage facility together with full packing and case-making workshops. Always looking for new business, the company last year had the honour of moving the Blair family out of Downing Street and into their new home when Tony Blair stepped down as Prime Minister. Some jobs are not so ‘high profile’ but all receive the same care and attention to detail that has been the hallmark of the company for nearly 40 years
