London’s position as an international centre for fashion as well as higher disposable incomes and a market with much more variety than in Denmark is attracting more and more Danish designers and fashion companies to London. Leading fashion designers such as Peter Jensen and Louise Amstrup are examples of Danish designers who have caught the attention of London and the rest of the UK. London’s dominance on the fashion stage is supported by research conducted by the Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce (DUCC), an organisation which recently created a forum for Danish fashion brands to establish contacts with agents, distributors, buyers and for designers to meet potential investors in the UK. The increasing interest in Danish designers and Danish brands is reflected in the high number of attendees at seminars and receptions on Danish fashion and design hosted by the DUCC. “The opportunity for generating high sales is much greater on the British market than the Danish for designers and brands” says Mr. Carsten Skovgaard, professional buyer at John Lewis Partnership, one of Great Britain’s most popular department stores. When it comes to fashion London is one of the most important cities in the world, and the biannual London Fashion Week is a great opportunity for Danish designers to show their collections to fashion buyers and fashion editors from all over the world. Moreover, some of the greatest fashion schools are based in London and British Fashion Council (BFC) constantly works on promoting the country as a global centre for fashion and design. “BFC are very open towards and good at supporting British based design talents no matter where in the world they come from” says designer Louise Amstrup, a Danish fashion designer. Together with Peter Jensen she was much acclaimed by British Vogue following their shows at the latest London Fashion Week. “Louise Amstrup proved she is yet another Danish-born designer (alongside Peter Jensen), worth watching” according to Vogue magazine. Despite the great opportunities, DUCC believes that Danish designers and fashion companies need better access to the sharing of experiences as well as discussions with agents and buyers who can lead the way to the British fashion market. “Despite the credit crunch, Danish fashion may be experiencing a period of growth in the UK,” says Martin Mortensen, Executive Director of the DUCC. “The industry already has a solid foothold on the British market and we believe the interest for Danish fashion and design in London will remain unabated as shown by the great turnout at our seminars.” |
