 News from the Director

Dear Members,

September is the month of our Fashion Seminar and Reception, which will take place at the Royal Danish Embassy on the 24th. We have invited Danish International Designer Ms Louise Amstrup and Carsten Skovgaard, who has more than 15 years of experience as a Menswear buyer for Harrods and John Lewis.

These Captains of Industry will share with us their views on Danish Fashion and how to approach and succeed in the British market as a Danish company. This event has turned out to be extremely popular so if you have not already booked and wish to attend please contact us as soon as possible.

Furthermore, we are expecting an audience of young Danish designers, fashion houses interested in UK expansion, Danish brands already established in the UK, Danish employees of London department stores and most importantly members of the Danish –UK Chamber of Commerce. It will be a very interesting mix, a great platform to exchange views, ideas and experiences and ultimately business. Please see page 5 for interviews of Ms Louise Amstrup.

On the 17th September 2008, on behalf of the Nordic Chambers, the Finish-British Chamber of Commerce has organised a Joint-Nordic Event at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which focuses on Russia’s role in the changing geopolitical environment and addresses the ever-increasing interest in trade and investment in Russia.

The event will be a one-day conference and the agenda for the day will be split into two parts. The morning sessions will analyze the macro-economic situation and the investment climate in Russia whereas the afternoon sessions will focus on legal and tax aspects of business in and with Russia, plus a review of the financial markets and of financing, industry views and practical examples of trade and investments.

In addition to the different Nordic chambers’ members, the conference aims to bring together a variety of experienced professionals and companies who share an interest in Russia in order to share their view and experiences.

Please welcome to the Chamber this month our newest member Maples Teesdale Solicitors.

Best regards,

Martin Mortensen
Executive Director
Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce

For the guests staying to the very end hotdogs were kindly provided by Scandinavian Kitchen and drinks were continued at the pub next door.

Future Nordic Thursday Drinks

For the past year the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel has been so kind to host almost all of our Nordic Thursday Drinks - and with great success.

Thus, we at the Nordic Chambers do think that it is now time for a change and have therefore decided to seek new venues around London - this without completely letting go of Radisson SAS Portman Hotel who will be hosting the event every second month.

Because of above we have asked different London-based venues to host our Nordic Thursday drinks in the future, among others Scandinavian Kitchen, who hosted the Nordic Thursday Drinks thursday 28 August (see above) and MADSEN Restaurant. We hope that all of us in that way will get to see places that we didn't know exitsted and hence get inspired to visit new restaurants and cafes around London.

Louise Amstrup - Interview with London-based Fashion Designer

London based fashion designer
Louise Amstrup

In the wake of London Fashion Week DUCC is arranging “Fashion in a Global Context” , a seminar and reception focusing on how Danish companies can make success on the UK market. In this connection London-based designer Louise Amstrup has been invited to make a presentation based on her experiences with the English fashion market. REDletter has in that connection had the great opportunity of interviewing the successful designer.

Louise Amstrup was born in Denmark (Roskilde) but moved to Germany to study at the prestigious fashion school in Dusseldorf, Akademie Mode und Design (AMD). Graduating in 2003 AMD awarded Louise Amstrup with Graduate Talent Prize. Following Lousie Amstrup moved to London where she worked for Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, Alistair Carr, Sophia Kokosalaki and Catherine Walker before she decided to take a new challenge and started her own company with her self-titled debut collection “Louise Amstrup” in 2006.
Louise Amstrup’s design will this year be shown at London’s Fashion Week with a show at the Royal Academy on 15 September.

Why the big interest in fashion? Where does it come from?
I guess I have always enjoyed expressing myself in a creative way and I soon realised that fashion design was the way for me.

How was it working for big names such as Alexander McQueen, etc.?
It was an invaluable experience! Of course it was hard, we worked ridiculous long hours under “interesting” circumstances, and I often thought, that I had reached my limit. But somehow I kept being able to push myself further, which was quite an interesting personal process. Apart from that it was amazing being able to work with some of the most skilled people in the fashion business, not only from a creative point of view but also technical.

Why did you decide to create your own label? (Was it obvious or a big and heavy decision?)
From the day I decided to study fashion design, I also knew that it would be with the intention of starting my own label. I had an extremely “lucky” start. I decided, while still freelancing, to just “try” and make a small collection. This collection got picked up by Francesca Forcolini (owner of Labour of Love) who instantly placed an order…and before I knew it, it had all kicked off. That first order gave me the opportunity to make another collection and here I am 3 years later.

Design by Louise Amstrup

What are the greatest challenges being a Danish designer with own label in the UK?
I think, that not being British sometimes make things a little harder in London. And additionally I didn’t study here either, so I did really enter the London fashion scene/ market as a complete outsider. I do think that BFC (British Fashion Council) are great at being open minded and support talent from all over the world as long as they are based in UK, but naturally I guess there is a reason why it is called the BRITISH fashion council ;-)

What are the premises for success in London/UK?
The good thing about London is that it is probably one of the best “showcases” for new designers in the world. The world press has already got an eye on London, and if you can get their attention the chances of success have already risen a lot. The next stage, which would be getting stockists, probably has to be seen from a more global point of view. And I guess there is reason why most UK based designers show in London but go to Paris to see all the buyers.

In general, is there anything characterizing Danish fashion design?
That is a hard question… I am sure there are elements which can be found in most Danish fashion design. But then again thinking of Jens Laugesen, Peter Jensen, Camilla Staerk, etc. we are all very different style wise. It has probably got more to do with how we approach our work, how we tend to keep a cool head, add a bit of self irony and never overload and creating “baroque” night mares. And naturally never forgetting that there is a fine balance between creativity, innovation and commercial values.

Seen from the London scene, is there a general attitude towards Danish designers and Danish fashion design? What are we known for?
I think we are known for being good at finding this balance of the 3 listed above and therefore Danish design has a high status in London… In the world.

MADSEN - New Restaurant in Town

Madsen Food has until now solely been a catering company but from the beginning of October the company’s founder, Charlotte Madsen, will open a new Scandinavian restaurant in South Kensington – MADSEN Restaurant.

The London-based catering firm Madsen Food was started by Danish born Charlotte Kruse Madsen back in 2006. Until now the company has solely been focusing on catering and has delivered Scandinavian specialties to mainly corporate customers in London. This including Danish specialities such as buffets, canapés and “smørrebrød” - an open sandwich mostly made on rye bread. Thus, from the beginning of October 2008 Charlotte Kruse Madsen will open her first restaurant “MADSEN” on 20 Old Bromton Road, South Kensington, London.

Charlotte Kruse Madesen

Charlotte Kruse Madsen trained at the prestigious catering school Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland before moving to London, to work for a large catering firm, BaxterStorey, at their client site Barclays HQ in Canary Wharf. Following she returned to Copenhagen to train at the renowned Restaurant Ida Davidsen for three months where she learnt to prepare their famous speciality “smørrebrød”.

MADSEN Restaurant will be focusing on the modern Scandinavian cuisine and it will be open for lunch and dinner. The restaurant will be able to seat approximately 68 persons. The lunch menu will consist of a mixture of smørrebrød, salads and warm dishes, whereas the evening menu will be an a la carte menu.

Furthermore MADSEN also has a smaller meeting room available for groups up to 16 people.
