Dear Members

Following the interest and the number of responses generated by last year’s annual economic business survey and the opportunities for press coverage which followed, this year the DUCC will again gauge expectations for the future business climate in the UK and Denmark. The survey is anonymous and takes less than five minutes to complete and yet will allow us to improve on our future strategy and the services we provide you.

For your benefit the results of the survey will be published just before the event that will take place on the 1st of April 2009 at the Royal Danish Embassy.  It is with great pleasure that I announce that in response to several requests from members, we have invited Mr Erik Nielsen, Chief Economist at Goldman Sachs to this event to share with us his views and expectations on the global economic downturn and to comment on the results of the survey. As we expect this evening to be extremely popular, members are advised to book in advance through info@ducc.co.uk.

The Annual DUCC Career development seminar will this year be a joint Nordic Junior event and will take place on the 3rd of March 2009 at the Radisson Portman Hotel. On behalf of the four Nordic Chambers of Commerce it will be chaired by the recently elected President of the Norwegian-British Chamber of Commerce.  Among the speakers we look forward to hearing from:  Kati Järvinen, Founder of Mindwind Ltd. Tove Selnes, VP of Human Resources, Opera Software ASA and Madeleine Ellis - Manager of Scan Jobs

Please welcome to the Chamber our newest members FOSS UK Ltd (Advisory Board), Bridgehead Group, Hospice Innovations and Madsen Restaurant.

Finally please welcome our new intern Nanna Christine Worsaae. Nanna took over from Trine in January and will stay with us until August this year, please see over for more information concerning the warm welcome that we extend to Nanna.

Best regards

Martin Mortensen
Executive Director

Nordic Thursday Drinks January 29 2009 at Scandinavian Kitchen

On the evening of 29 January 2009, the monthly Nordic Thursday Drinks took place. The concept of these events, meeting the last Thursday of every month for drinks after work is always very popular and an excellent opportunity to meet the Norwegian and Finnish chambers, as well as the DUCC members, in an informal environment.

This night was no exception. In the fully packed Scandinavian Kitchen, the owners, Bronte and Jonas, made sure no one went home hungry when serving their delicious canapés. The atmosphere was great and people were busy conversing while enjoying a few drinks. The event ended around 9.30 pm and for some, the evening continued at the pub next door.

The next Thursday Drinks will be 26 February 2009. Remember to sign up before hand to get a free drink. We look forward to seeing you!

Madsen is a new Scandinavian restaurant on Old Brompton Road, South Kensington, which aims to bring a new and refreshing food experience to London. The restaurant serves food inspired by the Nordic cooking traditions and thus serving traditional smørrebrød for lunch such as herring, smoked salmon, roastbeef with remoulade, and frikadeller. In the evening the focus is on the more modern dishes such as pigs cheeks cooked with Danish lager, plaice en cocotte with sautéed cabbage, and braised lamb shank with thyme.

On Sundays Madsen presents the ‘store kolde bord’/smörgasbord filled with traditional dishes from back home. For those hungering for the traditional dishes we have Swedish Tuesdays, currently offering “Pytt I Panna” and Danish Wednesdays serving “Stegt Flæsk med persillesovs” as dish of the day both at £11.50.

The restaurant itself seats 60 including a private dining room that can accommodate 12-14 guests and it can be reserved for private events and parties. The room furthermore have AV facilities, which makes it suitable for meetings and small business events. The team at Madsen is led by Danish owner Charlotte Kruse Madsen and head chef Rene Madsen, also Danish. Hospice Innovation was founded 2002 in Denmark by Ann Maj Kruse and Ole Bang as the platform for their business activities concerning the hospice and palliative care areas - both in Denmark and elsewhere around the globe. Ann Maj Kruse and Ole Bang has been the dedicated prime force in establishing the Danish hospice society - where Ole Bang for several years held the position as chairman. Hospice Innovation sponsors the annually event World Hospice Day with a photo gallery of the world wide activities. The communication and teaming up of hospices in power-groups is also a

major concern in order to share and educate best practices. This has been a new major focus - to evolve the future hospice through a heartfelt cooperation.

Dear members

My name is Nanna Christine Worsaae and I am the new Intern at the Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce. I started at the office 4 weeks ago and it has been 4 weeks of intense information flow and lots of impressions to take in. I am, however, already certain that this opportunity will provide me with a much greater insight to how the world of business functions and thereby strengthen me when I return to Denmark in August to commence my master in International Business at Copenhagen Business School.

During the last couple of weeks, I have been working on the new design of the website. And it has finally been launched! The idea is to keep it simple and streamlined, and more importantly, easy to navigate. Furthermore, we have decided to send out the DUCC Newsletter via email, from which it is possible to click straight on to the articles you find relevant – however, the newsletter will also be uploaded on the website in full length.

Throughout the next five months at the DUCC, we will be having various interesting events all of which have different themes. Nordic Thursday Drinks are held last Thursday of every month at Scandinavian Kitchen in corporation with the Finnish- and the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, which I look very much forward to.

And as to a more personal presentation; before moving to this great city I lived in Vesterbro, Copenhagen, and studied at Copenhagen Business School. I finished my Bachelors Degree in Business, Language and Culture (former SPRØK) last summer and have previously lived and studied in Venezuela and Singapore. This time I will be exploring and enjoying London and I look very much forward to meeting all of you.

If you have any queries at all, do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached at: intern@ducc.cu.uk.

Yours sincerely

Nanna Christine Worsaae

Scan Magazine – Bringing Scandinavian Spirit to London

‘Open minded’ and ‘free spirited’ are words often used when speaking of Scandinavians. Copenhagen is called ‘clean, green, dynamic and fun’ – and full of the happiest people on earth. On the other hand, Scandinavia is also casual and cozy, but how do you bring that very spirit across borders?

Thomas Winther, executive editor of Scan Magazine, is certain that there exists a “Scandinavian Volkgeist” and that you can easily identify common traits and express ‘how Scandinavian’ something is. Nevertheless, he emphasizes the importance of delivering what has been promised as well as expecting to be held accountable of one’s actions; ”We do not like charlatans, boasting or bullish behavior and we distance ourselves from those people. Some would say that it is ‘Janteloven’ but it is rooted in our rational approach to things and honest way of doing business”

Scan Magazine was invented a day Thomas Winther went for lunch and was wondering why all magazines were aimed at all other expat groups except Scandinavians. He sold the idea to Mads Petersen, who is now business partner and designer of Scan Magazine, and five months after Scan Magazine was to be found on the shelves. Until the magazine was entirely established, Thomas Winther had to keep his day job. However, he was not able to answer business calls in his office, so he had to find a place with complete privacy – a nearby graveyard. “I found this little enclosure which held the grave of Daniel Defoe and there I could stand in relative shelter. I guess it will be a good story one day that I started the Scan Magazine ‘empire’ standing on the grave of the guy who wrote Robinson Crusoe. The tourist guides hated me though”.

The next step for Scan Magazine is to expand the distribution to other countries. Ireland and Scotland are already well established and Germany is their next goal. TW is optimistic about the future and concludes that they have “achieved a lot more than they hoped for in their first half year of existence”. Scan Magazine is a handy business resource for Scandinavian companies and individuals living in the UK, since it is possible to find anything you need – be it hotels, nannies, flight offers etc. It is sent on a named basis to all business members of the Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian Chambers of Commerce in the UK and it is a good medium to advertise in if you wish to promote your business in the ‘Brand Scandinavia’ context.

Scandinavia is not only ‘open minded’ and ‘free spirited’ but an actual brand; “We have our own very special way of doing things and it is valued by business associates and consumers all over the world. The Scandinavian spirit is indeed well distributed across borders and Scan Magazine has almost one hundred distribution points in the UK. “This is something the Scandinavian expat community never had but always needed”.
