Pre-Club at Roof Gardens, 16 November

Friday the 16th of November the members of the Swedish, Norwegian, Finish and Danish chambers were invited to a pre-club at the Roof Gardens. There was free entrance between 8-10 pm and for those who came before 9 pm a complimentary drink was served for them as well. The theme for the pre-club was Scandinavian Iceparty and the drink certainly lived up to that, the club was also visited by a snow queen. Even though it was November it was still possible to go out in the garden where there were heating lamps set out.
The room was quite packed and the atmosphere good. Later on when there was opened further up to the club people got on the dance floor and danced the night away.

Communication & Branding Forum, 20 November

On the 20th of November then Nordic Chambers had invited their members to an evening which bore the title "Communication and Branding Forum". The event was held at the Millennium Knightsbridge and the speakers were Jan Blichfeldt, Deputy Manager from Bates United, Anders Gottlieb-Nygaard, Creative Strategist from Naked Communications and Vibeke Ulmann from Catalys Communications.

Jan Blichfeldt - Bates United

Hildegunn Andersen from the Norwegian Chamber welcomed the guests and introduced the first speaker Jan Blichfeldt. Mr. Blichfeldt talked about image, brand and reputation. He said that almost everyone has the wrong understanding of what a brand is. The companies think they own the brand, but in fact it is the consumer who owns it. He showed his point through a case with Coca-Cola, where they changed the taste and took the old one off the market. They did this because they though they owned the brand, but the consumers didn't like it, so Coca-Cola had to put the old drink back on the market.
Mr. Blichefeldt stated that the companies own the product and the consumers own the brand. But if the companies want their products to be viewed as a brand it needs reputation - the stronger the reputation the stronger the brand. This led Mr. Blichfeldt to the conclusion: the brand is a reputation.

Anders Gottlieb-Nygaard -
Naked Communications

The next speaker was Anders Gottlieb-Nyggard. He asked the retoric question "Is advertising nescessary?". Mr. Gottlieb-Nygaard said that big shifts are happening now, there are more fragmentation and more choice, and the problem is that many advertising agencies still behave as they did 50 years ago. In the same line as Mr. Blichfeldt, Mr. Gottlieb-Nygaard said that the power had shifted from the product of producers to customers. So agencies need so spend more money on marketing and less on advertising, it all starts with the consumer.

Vibeke Ulmann, Catalyst
Communications

The last speaker was Vibeke Ulmann. Miss Ulmann talked about PR and how to use PR the right way. She said the firm often make the mistake that they think they can do the PR themselves, the fact is that when they try for example to write a press release they forget that they not are writing it to a potential customer, so it becomes too much of a sale story. A PR-agency knows how to write a press release and knows where to send it. Miss Ulmann said though, that it was important to hire a PR-agency who knows the field your company is in, that way they already have established relations and that it a lot what PR is about, building relations.

The three guest speakers

Hereafter there were Q&A and then the winners from the raffle were picked. Sara Andersson and Karen Marie Kristensen were the lucky winners of 2 tickets each for a return trip to Norway with Norwegian. Then there were drinks and canapes and people networked across the chambers.

Saxo Bank, 27 November

Peter Klein - Director Saxo
Bank UK
On the 27th of November Saxo Bank hosted an event for the members of the chamber. The guest speaker was Samuel Rachlin, who is the head of corporate communications in Denmark.

The evening was introduced by UK Director Peter Klein who gave a brief intro to Saxo Bank before giving the word to Robert Gray who told us about the template platform Saxo Bank had been building. The template is easy to use as it is based on Windows and free to use as well. It is meant to be used by private investors, so they easily can see the stock prices and business news.
Robert Gray - Head of UK
Institutional

Hereafter Samuel Rachlin was introduced by Peter Klein. Mr. Rachlin talked about globalisation and communication. He said that many people had a wrong understanding of globalisation; they thought it was a new "thing", but actually it had existed ever since countries began trading with each other. The new thing about globalisation was the changing of means and tools.
Samuel Rachling - Head of
Corporate Communications,
Saxo Bank

Mr. Rachlin said that we are living in a global village, a term that Denmark hadn't quite grasped until the Muhammad-crisis in early 2006. Mr. Rachlin thought that until the Muhammad-crisis the Danes has thought of globalisation as outsourcing and off-shoring, but didn't quite understand that they were part of a global village. Therefore the Danes didn't understand what hit them in 2006 and weren't prepared either. There was a lack of strategic communication and damage control and the Danes didn't quite understand the values and beliefs of the Muslims, just like they didn't understand the Danish ones. As Mr. Rachlin said technology can fill the information gap but not the cultural gap.
So in the future Denmark needs a damage control plan and need to educate cosmopolitan leaders. We can use our humour as an asset as well, as Mr. Rachlin said, Denmark is like the boy in the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen "The Emperor's new clothes" that shouts "he hasn't got any clothes on".
The evening ended with drinks, canapés and some networking.

The Danish Election

Written by Michaela Horn Simonsen

As most of you probably know there has just been an election for the Danish Parliament. The Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen (The Liberal Party) called an election in the middle of October, 1½ year before time. The election was the 13th of November and Mr. Fogh Rasmussen was re-elected as prime minister.

But as many of you probably also noticed, Danes aren’t allowed to vote if they’ve been living abroad for more than 2 years, unless they are posted by the government. Many Danes living abroad are however, unhappy with this situation and therefore Danes Worlwide decided to make an election on their website to see which parties the Danes living abroad preferred. Here Mr. Fogh Rasmussen won the election as well, but he got the majority of the votes and would be able to form a coalition with the Conservatives. The Liberal party got 32.2 % and the Conservatives got 18.2 % from the Danes living abroad, this would mean that the two parties wouldn’t need the support from The Danish People’s Party, New Alliance or one of the seats from the Faeroe Islands as they do now.

New Alliance, which is a party started this year by Naser Khader, Anders Samuelsen and Gitte Seeberg got 11.5% of the votes from the Danes living abroad, this result is much better than the actual where they only got 2.8 %. But whereas New Alliance did well amongst the Danes abroad, then the Danish People’s Party and the Socialistic People’s Party didn’t do so well with only 6.7 % and 7.1%. These two parties however, did very well in Denmark, where they Socialistic People’s Party doubled their seats in the parliament (they got 13.0 %) and the Danish People’s Party got 13.9 % of the votes.

The general secretary for Danes Worldwide Jens Witthøfft Nielsen says that Danes living abroad are more global oriented and that might be why New Alliance got so many of the votes and the Danish People’s Party so few. Danes Worldwide hopes that this election will be a help to get the attention of the government on all the Danes living abroad who aren’t allowed to vote.
