Joint Nordic ICT Forum, 23 January 2008

Martin Falch - Norwegian
Chamber of Commerce

Wednesday 23 of January members of the Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Danish Chamber of Commerce were invited to the Joint Nordic ICT Forum. The event was hosted by the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce and Martin Falch, the Vice President of the Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the delegates. Three guest speakers provided new interesting perspectives on future communication on the web.

Rikard Steiber - Google

The first speaker was Rikard Steiber, Director of Product Marketing EMEA Google, who was presenting the shift from using the internet to seek information and further on to communicate online. He stated that the consumers of today are no longer sceptic towards security on the internet and the balance of power is shifting thus consumers can use each others’ experiences at the web and stand together to make changes. Mr Streiber predicted that networking and entertainment will be the future of the internet. Finally he presented a business idea which had become a success using the internet and thereby showing how businesses can grow via networking and forums at the internet.

John Horsley - Marzar

The second speaker was John Horsley from Marzar which is a website for B2B consumers. He also stated that networking is a great part of social life as well as business life. Mr Horsley predicted the future will bring us web 3.0 where voice and live pictures will be used when communicating electronically among business associates.

George Berkowski - WooMe

The third speaker was George Berkowski who is one of the entrepreneurs of www.woome.com. The idea behind the website is to provide speed-dating in electronic media. The users are to put a profile on the web and thereafter make sessions of 60 seconds talks to people whom they find interesting. Using web cameras to see the person you are talking to and at the same time hearing their voice is more effective, according to Mr Berkowski, as you immediately get an impression of the person.

All three guest speakers agreed that entertainment and networking will be a great part of the future web and it can be use both for socialising as well as business. After the presentations different questions were discussed by the guest speakers and the delegates and thereafter drink and canapés were served.

 News from the Director

Dear Members

As mentioned in last month’s mail shot, the Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce is introducing a biannual economic business survey in order to gauge your expectations on the future business climate in the UK and in Denmark. The survey is anonymous and takes less than five minutes to complete and yet will allow us to improve our future strategy and the services we provide to you.

February’s program of events begins here at the Danish Embassy on the 20th of February with our seminar on headhunting presented by International head-hunter Mr Kai Hammerich, Partner at Russell Reynolds.

On the 28th of February Nordea Bank in the City of London, a member of all the Nordic Chambers, will host a joint Nordic buffet lunch organised by the Finnish Chamber of Commerce. The lunch will include an economic update on the Nordic region and the UK, with a presentation from guest speaker Leena Mörttinen, chief economist at Nordea Bank.

In response to requests from several members, we have invited a group of finance specialists from KPMG and Danske Bank to share with us their expertise on the proposed amendments to the residence and domicile tax rules. When these amendments are likely to become law and their consequences for non-domicile residents in the UK will be the focus of the discussion. The event, a breakfast meeting at the London Capital Club, is sponsored by Danske Bank and will take place on the 4th of March. We would, as always, very much like to hear your feedback about this new format.

We are also pleased to announce the date of the Easter Evening Buffet, taking place on the 13th of March at the Danish Church. Expect to see the same delicious selection of Danish dishes that is always popular whenever we visit the Danish Church in London.

Please welcome to the Chamber this month our newest members schmidt hammer lassen, K & M Partnership I/S, Wimmer Space and Wimmer Financial.

Finally please welcome our new intern Annette Juhl Nielsen. Annette took over from Michaela at the end of January and will stay with us until August this year, please see over for more information concerning the warm welcome of Annette.

Best regards,

Martin Mortensen
Executive Director
Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce

schmidt hammer lassen

schmidt hammer lassen – democratic architecture

Danish architects schmidt hammer lassen has for more than 20 years enjoyed a reputation as one of Scandinavia’s leading, award-winning architectural practices.

schmidt hammer lassen was founded in Aarhus, Denmark in 1986 by architects Morten Schmidt, Bjarne Hammer and John Lassen. Today the practice has grown substantially and employs a 170 strong staff based in Aarhus, Copenhagen, Oslo and London. The partner complement has also grown and today also includes Morten Holm, Kim Holst Jensen, Stephen D. Willacy, along with three associate partners. Day-to-day management of the firm is the responsibility of CEO Bente Damgaard.

Bente Damgaard, Chief Executive
Officer

schmidt hammer lassen’s reputation is built on passion for architectural uniqueness, the way buildings interact with their surroundings, involvement of the users, sustainable solutions and the Scandinavian light.

A building revolves around people. A building is not only an architectonic shape, but must also be closely integrated with its surroundings, its functions and its social context. A lot of architecture is characterized by being elevated and reserved. Schmidt hammer lassen design buildings the other way around – by creating architecture that opens up to the outside world – the extract of democratic architecture and the essence of schmidt hammer lassen’s approach.

Current international projects are amongst others the Amazon Court office building in Prague, the City of Westminster College in London, the Thor Heyerdahl School in Norway, and a number of construction projects and master plans in China, where a total of approximately one million square metres are currently under development.

Domestically, schmidt hammer lassen is best known for the prestigious extension to the Royal Danish Library – The Black Diamond – ARoS Art Museum and Greenland's Cultural Centre in Nuuk.

Wimmer Space

Per Wimmer's story is a story about making dreams reality. Turning into reality what appears to be a far-fetched vision which few people consider achievable. Per is scheduled to become the first Dane in space and currently holds three space flight reservations. Meanwhile, Per is undergoing space-related training, such as
Zero-G flying, fighter jet flying and centrifuge training.

The activities of Wimmer Space include: Motivational speaking for corporates and schools, TV documentaries, charity work, investments in space-related businesses, space training, and recent a contribution to a coffee-table book “Powermen” by Vibeke Hartkorn where twelve men give their visions for the future.

The goals of Wimmer Space are: 1) to get Per Wimmer to space and back safely and, ultimately, to place the Danish flag, the "Dannebrog," on the Moon and 2) In the process to inspire today’s children to live out their dreams – whatever their dreams might be - and to encourage their interest in space and science. Wimmer Space works with
Unicef, Hospice Foundation, Ideas Foundation and other great charities to achieve that goal.

Having visited close to 50 countries on Earth, incl. some of the most remote places (been visiting the Amazone Indians; been walking on the live vulcanos of Hawaii; been diving with sharks in the Fiji Islands, been visiting the Southern tip of Africa and South America; been trekking the Inka trail to Macchu Pichu; been visiting the Easter Islands, been riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle coast-to-coast and back in the USA; been hangliding over the beaches of Rio de Janero - the ultimate adventure remains: Going to space……

Join the ride and let Per take you to unchartered new heights where The Sky Is No Limit......."
