Christmas Lunch 14 December 2007

One of the festive decorated tables

14th December it was time for the DUCC annual Christmas Lunch. It was held at the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel and more than 110 people had signed up for this event. The guests were upon arrival treated to a glass of champagne before the lunch. Martin Mortensen welcomed everyone and Honorary President Jim Davis said grace. The lunch traditionally started off with herring followed by a buffet which included Danish meatballs, roasted pork, fish fillets and red cabbage salad just to mention a few of the things. Later on there were dessert, ris à l'amande where people could get lucky and win a box of chocolate.

During the lunch the Chairman Per Troen handed out prizes. The first prize went to Bob Fereday for having the most Christmases clothes on (tie and cufflinks). The second prize went to Krogh & Parters who for the third year in a row paid their
Christmas tree
membership fee the quickest. The last prize went to Tom Schrøder who had attened most DUCC events during the year. Hereafter Per announced the winners of the raffle together with Gunilla Filipson. There were 9 lucky winners in total. Then it was time for some carolling where Per Troen managed to gather a little choir. People seemed to enjoy themselves and the talk was very lively at the tables. After the lunch the guests went down to the bar at the hotel where they continued to have a good time.

 News from the Director

Dear Members,

First of all I would like to express our appreciation to those of you from whom we have received Christmas Cards and positive feedback for 2007.

We are committed to delivering at least the same level of value throughout 2008 with a calendar full of interesting events and excellent networking opportunities. The first opportunity of the year will be our Joint Nordic ICT Forum on the 23rd of January 2008 with prominent guest speakers from Google, Nokia and Marzar.

Following the success of our last career development seminar, we have invited on the 20th of February a panel of head-hunters, including Kai Hammerich, Partner of Russell Reynolds to present and take questions on how to promote yourself and your CV.

With effect from the 1st of January 2008 the DUCC has established the DUCC Advisory Board. The Advisory Board will be launched with a dinner at the residence of His Excellency the Danish Ambassador who has kindly offered to host an annual dinner for those who have already confirmed their wish and commitment to join this exclusive category of membership: 1st Corporate Technologies, CorrenTroen, Danske Bank, DSV Road, Group 4 Securicor, Heptagon Capital, Industri Kapital, ISS, Krogh & Partners, Ladefoged Business Services, Metsa Tissue, Nordea, Novo Nordisk, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Soditic, The Maersk Company, Tulip, UIE and Vestas. The dinner will take place on the 24th of January 2008. The second Advisory Board dinner will be hosted by Mr Jesper Kjaedegaard, Chief Executive Officer, at The Maersk Company.

In 2008 members of the Chamber will continue to receive the popular hard copy magazine “Nyt fra Danmark” which includes a UK section (in English). This section continues to put a page at the Chamber’s disposal, through which we aim to increase our profile and to promote our members further. Should any of you have a story you wish to be shared then please contact us and we shall liaise with the journalist responsible.

In the meantime, I look forward to welcoming you to our Nordic Thursday Drinks at the Radisson SAS Portman Hotel on the 31st of January 2008, which will be an opportunity for you to bid farewell to Ms Michaela Horn Simonsen whom we thank for her thoroughly professional, hard working and skillful approach to work within the chamber over the last six months. It is with our warmest wishes that she returns to Denmark to complete her Masters in Business Communication at Copenhagen Business School and we wish her the very best of luck in her future career.

We wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.
ecutive Director

Martin Mortensen
Executive Director

Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce

Thank you

As we now have reached January 2008 it means that my time as an intern at DUCC is getting closer to an end. I’ve enjoyed my time here in London and working for DUCC, it has given me many experiences and taught me quite a lot of the relationship between Danish and UK businesses and their network. It’s been interesting to work for DUCC where the members come from so many different businesses. I would like to thank you all for having been very helpful in all matters as well as very open towards me.

Before my internship does end I still have a few more tasks to do. One of them will be to send out a questionnaire which should help us to tell us about your views on the future. It is also our aim that the questionnaire should give us an insight in Danish companies situated in the UK as well as UK companies who have Danes employed. It would help us a lot if you could take the time to answer the questionnaire, it will only take about 5 minutes.

I
hope to see you at one (or both) of my last two events before I head home, the Joint Nordic ICT Forum the 23rd of January or at Thursday Drinks the 31st of January.

Interview with Thomas Winther - Team Denmark FC

Thomas Winther

Anyone up for a game of football, a run in Regents Park or a party with other young (25 – 40 years) Danish professionals? We have interviewed Thomas Winther who is the founder of Team Denmark FC about the club and activities.

Could you please tell me a bit about your background and why you started Team Denmark FC?

I took the first part of my education in Denmark in economics. I then went to London to take my BA in Business Administration at Southbank University. From there on I took my masters in Business Management from Cass Business School. Right after graduation I got a job with Price Waterhouse Coopers and worked there for 1½ year. During my stay there I wanted to extend my networks with other Danes living in London and therefore started Team Denmark FC with 3 other Danish professionals. I recently got employed at Thomson Financials.

Tell me a bit more about the club

We started the club in 2004 as a football club for Danes and within 6 months we had 40 members. It was however, only guys who were on the football team, so we decided to start a running club for girls as well. We meet every Saturday in Regents Park and after everyone has played and been running we go to a pub. We now have around 100 members of mainly young professionals. We also participate in tournaments with the team against other British and international teams.

You also have some parties called Nordic Night?

Yes, as it is very expensive to play in tournaments we needed to raise some money. We therefore decided about one year ago to start up Nordic Nights. It’s parties where young professionals from Denmark, Sweden and Norway meet. Many members from the club are there to catch up but other people are there as well to meet new people and to have a good time.

Is there anything Scandinavian about your parties besides the people who are attending?

We do try to get Danish bands to play; we work together with Marianne Thomsen from Summit Productions, also a member of the chamber. She finds a band to us to every party. So we try to get Danish bands but since we are on low budget it can be a bit hard. The bands do get promoted through our flyers and in our invitations to the parties.

Do you collaborate with other members of the Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce?

Yes, we recently just got a sponsorship agreement with TopLanguage Jobs.

What about other Danish clubs?

We collaborate with Scandinavian Kitchen, the Danish Church, where we store our hardware, KFUK and the Danish Embassy. Wherever we can promote Team Denmark FC we do, so that we can get some players on our football team.

So why did you become a member of the Danish-UK Chamber of Commerce?

I am very interested in networking with other Danes as well as interested in the events. Also, the chamber was recommended to me by quite a few people, so those are the reasons why I decided to join.

The next Nordic Night takes place the 18th of January 2008, tickets are limited. To read more about Nordic Night, please click here

SPA EFT

SPA ETF is a specialist provider of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). SPA's ETFs utilise the performance of innovative stock portfolios created by MarketGrader, an independent research provider used by some of the world's leading investment houses. SPA was established to offer private and institutional investors access to Exchange Traded Funds, which are listed in London, New York and Italy. With offices in London and New York, SPA ETF aims to become a leading provider globally.

SPA ETFs combine the benefits of a high performance Index Fund with the flexibility of individual shares. Our ETFs aim to outperform key US indices and the majority of active fund managers over the long term. When combined with the efficient structure of an ETF, this offers access to the potential for strong returns at a lower cost than actively managed funds. SPA ETF is supported by London and Capital, a London based Investment and Fund Manager, who provide research, quantitative analysis and regulatory support.

The benefits of SPA ETFs

  • Performance: Our ETFs have been designed to outperform the major US indices
  • Diversification: Through just one ETF share you can gain diversified market exposure
  • Liquidity: As ETFs trade in real time on stock exchanges, they are liquid and can provide greater investment flexibility than mutual funds, which tend to trade only once a day
  • Transparency: With ETFs, information on underlying securities is published daily. With many types of pooled investments this is not possible

About MarketGrader Indices

MarketGrader has created indices which focus on US equities and are designed to outperform the major US indices. They select stocks from a universe of around 5,700 US listed equities, based on a company’s fundamental attractiveness, combined with sensible diversification in terms of sector distribution and market capitalisation. The MarketGrader system scores each company according to 24 specific fundamental factors and are:

  • Fundamentally driven - the top companies are selected on the strength of their fundamentals
  • Equally weighted - to extract performance from each stock
  • Cost Efficiency: ETFs can be highly attractive as they tend to have relatively low annual expense ratios
  • Diversified - on the basis of sound portfolio diversification
  • Automated - computer-generated algorithms with no subjective bias
  • Regularly re-balanced - at least twice each year

Nicolai Petri, Vice President Western
Europe

Nicolai Petri, Metsä Tissue’s vice president for West Europe said, “Most people don’t think of the washroom as anything more than simply “somewhere to go”. However, a recent survey carried out across Europe shows the public washroom to be much more than that. The survey has shown us that people see the washroom as a place of refuge: somewhere to take a break from the busy office or escape the crowded shopping mall for a few moments of peace, taking a nap, reading the paper, speaking on the phone or changing clothes. In today’s always-on world, the washroom is one place where you can get away from it all. We believe it is “the most important room in the world” and our aim is to provide and develop products that creates as positive an experience as possible”

Metsä Tissue offers the most complete and comprehensive range of products for “the most important room in the world”. The Katrin brand comprises an array of touch-free dispensing solutions, hand towel and toilet paper products, soaps, disinfectants, air fresheners, feminine hygiene products and waste bins.
