See why Copenhagen, Denmark has been named home to not only the world’s Best City – according to Monocle, July/August 2008 - but also the world’s Best Design City. The future of architecture is on display at the Danish Embassy this summer as 18 Danish firms present sustainable new technologies and designs that will contribute to solving the global architectural challenges of the 21st century.
Curated by a specialist in the field of sustainable architecture, Danish architect Vibeke Grupe Larsen, and housed in an innovative, fully reusable and ultimately recyclable, totally cardboard and paper display by Hemingway Design / Wildcard Creative, the projects are presented through models as well as virtual means at the Danish Embassy, itself of great architectural interest as it is the last building designed by Arne Jacobsen.
sust-DANE-able shows how internationally established Danish architectural practices as well as up-and-coming architects interpret the concept of ‘sustainability’ from a social, economic and, not least, environmental perspective.
The physical setting of this exhibition is a wonderful reason alone for all interested in architecture and design to visit sust-DANE-able. The embassy building on London’s Sloane Street was designed by Arne Jacobsen between 1969-71 and completed in 1976, after his death. This will be the public’s first chance to get inside the courtyard of the embassy and to see an architectural project by one of the greatest designers in history, which has been hidden for 30 years. The richly varied projects on show are based on this tradition of innovative thinking, yet they renew it in accordance with contemporary challenges and requirements.
sust-DANE-able is generating considerable interest and is guaranteed to be one of the hits of this exciting architectural summer season. Exhibition designer Wayne Hemingway highlights that: “This exhibition takes us to places that we all should go, inside the thinking of 18 Danish architectural practices, which demonstrate how social, economic and environmental sustainability is being addressed by the most forward thinking architects now at work. It’s not hard to understand why we called this exhibition sust-DANE-able.”
Participating architectural firms are: 3XN, Aarhus Architects and Aart, Arkitema, C.F. Møller, DISSING & WEITLING, EBD, Force4, Friis & Moltke, Henning Larsen Architects, Holgaard Architects, KHR Architects, Mutopia, Rubow Architects, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, Site, Svendborg Architects and Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects.
