The Danish "startup factory" Rainmaking, which opened their office in London in 2010 made 4 investments into startups during their first year in UK. The first investment was made into trueskin, which was co-founded together with two local industry experts and a successful UK angel investor. Trueskin aims to become a chain of advanced skin clinics. The concept is based around offering customers free skin consultations by experienced therapists who based on the results recommends treatments and products to help solving any skin problems the clients may have.
The first clinic was opened in September 2010 inside the beauty department of Bentalls (the shopping centre in Kingston). In January 2011 the second unit was opened in Bluewater shopping centre and it is expected that they will open additional 4-6 clinics in 2011.
Carsten Kølbek, the co-founder of Rainmaking, explains about the initial experience: "Frankly, we have been stunned by the success we have seen in Bentalls and Bluewater. More than 70% of the customer who get the free consultation ends up buying treatments and products and the average transaction value is more than £ 100. Finally, more than 50% of our turnover is now coming from repeat customers - and that is just after 3 months of operation".
Rainmaking claims they will start or invest in another 3-4 businesses in UK in 2011 and they expect these to be within their two main areas of interest Health & Beauty and ITC. Rainmaking operates an open door policy and love to meet with interesting entrepreneurs and potential co-investors.
