Dr. Isaac Sheps
CEO Carlsberg UK

Dear Chamber Members and Friends,

We are at the beginning of a new, exciting year after two very successful years for Carlsberg UK . In the last two years we completed our turnaround plans which resulted in us outperforming market trends in all segments and achieving a significant improvement in our profitability.

So what is so exciting for us in 2011?  Firstly, we will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of our founder J.C. Jacobsen, whose vision and energy made Carlsberg what it is today. Secondly, we will be investing substantially in our two leading international brands, Carlsberg and Tuborg, and if our plans are realized, we will be very close to moving from the fourth to the third largest brewer in the UK market.

These are exciting times for the Carlsberg Group as well. Since the Scottish and Newcastle acquisition in 2008, Carlsberg has moved from being a Danish brewer, with a global flagship brand and a strong presence in the UK, to the world's fourth largest brewer with a footprint across emerging markets, such as Eastern Europe and Asia.  These markets are offering us promising growth opportunities, both organically and through acquisition, and provide us with a good balance to the more mature Northern and Western European beer markets where consumption continues to be in marginal decline.

We have always been very conscious of our role in society and no more so than today. Our commitment to efficiency goes hand in hand with our targets of reducing our water and energy consumption; minimising our carbon emissions; and ensuring that our raw materials come from a sustainable source.  At a time when some countries, such as the UK and Denmark, are struggling with issues such as under-age and 'binge' drinking, we are also seeking the most appropriate ways to encourage responsible drinking.

Ever since it was founded, Carlsberg has been committed to improving the quality of its products and this is still just as important.  Our extensive research and development facilities, based in Copenhagen and Strasbourg, allow us both to improve our existing portfolio and ensure that we have a pipeline of exciting new innovations to launch across our markets.

You will hear more of this on 12th May 2011 when I am delighted that Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, President and CEO of Carlsberg Group, will be the guest speaker at the Annual dinner.

It goes without saying that Carlsberg UK will sponsor the event and promise to serve the best beer in the world…..well, probably. All the best,

Dr. Isaac Sheps
CEO
Carlsberg UK
